Botox is a revolutionary treatment for dynamic facial lines and wrinkles such as the crow's feet, frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and "smokers' lines" above the lip. Botox has been used for many years for medical patients with muscle spasms and other conditions. In the 1980's, a Canadian ophthalmologist, who happens to be married to a dermatologist, noticed that the patients she was treating for eye spasm had had no wrinkles around the treated eye. This launched a revolution in successful treatment of what were previously very difficult to treat wrinkles.
The reason these lines are so difficult to treat, is that they come as a result of facial expressions. In other words, they are caused by repetitive creasing of the skin when we move our faces by smiling, frowning, lifting our brows or pursing our lips. Botox weakens the muscles responsible for these movements, thereby smoothing the wrinkles. Botox can literally be used to subtly reshape the face by treating muscles responsible for pulling down the brows and the corners of the mouth and leaving the muscles responsible for lifting these areas to act unopposed.
Many patients are concerned that Botox will leave them looking expressionless or plastic. Rest assured that, as with any cosmetic procedure, Botox requires skill and an aesthetic eye. It is only when it is performed poorly that it is noticeable. Just come into the office to see the results of our work. We are all enthusiastic Botox patients!
